SuperComputing Development Index Released in Qingdao

Nov 21, 2011

China SuperComputing Development Index of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS SCDI) was released at the 1st Conference on Supercomputing Applications of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCA2011) held in Qingdao from Nov. 7th to Nov. 9th. Prof. CHI Xuebin, director of Supercomputing Center of Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) of CAS announced CAS SCDI at the opening of the conference.

Development and application of supercomputers has stepped into an era of petascale and new challenges are coming. Quantitatively evaluating the development of Supercomputing for analyzing the potential issues in the past several years and making the optimal decisions on supercomputing development in the future become increasingly essential in this inspiring era. Proposed by Supercomputing Center of CAS (www.sccas.cn), CAS SCDI provides a scientific and quantitative approach to evaluate the development of Supercomputing in the CAS.

The evaluation index system of CAS SCDI includes six partial indexes: Individual Supercomputing Environmental Construction Index, Individual Supercomputing Environmental Application Index, Individual Users’ Scientific Output Index, Individual Scientific Research Projects Support Index, Individual Talents Training Index, Individual Income Index; 17 indicators in total.

During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period (2006~2010), CAS SCDI had increased from 45.87 to 343.41, with an average annual growth ratio of 65.42%. The individual indexes had increased significantly during 2009~2010 according to Professor CHI, due to the successful development of CAS SuperComputing Grid (CSCGrid, http://cscgrid.cas.cn) which is the necessary computing infrastructure of CAS and owns an architecture of 3-tier: one head center in CNIC, eight regional centers and seventeen campus centers.

Based on the results of CAS SCDI, the development of Supercomputing in CAS will focus more on applications of massively parallel computing, talent training, user groupexpanding, improvement of the system usage ratio, supporting of scientific research projects.
